FAQs

Common questions on employment law retainers.

1. What is an employment law and HR retainer?

Our employment law and HR retainers provides you with advice on employment issues from a qualified employment solicitor, rather than an HR professional. For a monthly cost, you’ll receive a set number of hours of an employment solicitor’s time that you can use flexibly to seek advice on existing or specific employment issues, revisit documentation, or to manage employment risks.

2. What’s included within the retainer?

All of our employment law retainers come with a fixed number of hours that you can use flexibly on either employment law advice or on documentation.

For example, one month you may be facing a disciplinary and looking to take advice on how to ensure a fair process, while another month you may wish for us to draft your company a flexible working policy, or set of policies.

All of our employment law retainers include:

  • A dedicated employment lawyer who will be your main point of contact.
  • General employment law advice on day-to-day issues like flexible working requests, maternity and parental leave, and disciplinaries, grievances and dismissal processes.
  • Access to standard templates and policies that you can customise or that we can customise for you using your retainer hours.
  • Quarterly employment law updates and briefings so you can keep ahead of any upcoming changes.
  • Discounted hourly rates on additional hours or on our full range of employment law services.

Depending on your business’ needs, our Executive and Bespoke packages include training sessions for people managers, tailored settlement agreements and TUPE transfers. Due to the volume of work involved in employment tribunal preparation and litigation, this service is not included in our Essential and Executive packages.

Not sure whether your needs are covered by our retainers? We’d be happy to talk you through your needs; simply call us on 0203 007 5500 to arrange a free 30-minute call with one of our employment solicitors.

3. How much does a retainer cost?

Our employment law retainers start from £550 excluding VAT for 2 hours of advice each month, which are suited to companies with a headcount of up to 20, or companies with an existing in-house HR team looking for specialist advice.

Retainers can be scaled up to include more hours, or we’re happy to tailor a package to suit your business’ needs, depending on your requirements. If you run out of hours in any one given month, you can choose to either add additional hours at a discounted rate, or, if your needs aren’t urgent, we will continue work in the following month.

You’ll be billed on a monthly basis and, at the end of each month, you’ll receive a round-up of how much time has been used and on what tasks.

4. Is an employment law retainer suitable for me?

Every business’ requirements are different, but we find most of our employment law retainer clients fall into one of five categories:

  • Small business owners who do not have an in-house HR team where time is valuable and responsibility for disputes, policies and contracts lays with Directors or Partners.
  • Businesses who have had a recent employment dispute and are looking to mitigate the risk of a similar issue arising in future.
  • HR Managers who have great broad expertise, but who may need a second opinion on more niche employment issues that arise to manage risk.
  • Small to mid-sized businesses that have grown rapidly where policies may have become quickly outdated or unfit for the size of the business, but are yet to be updated.
  • Mid-sized businesses who may be going through a wider re-structure, acquisition or merger and need ongoing support for a fixed period of time.

If you have a specific requirement in mind and you’re unsure whether it would be covered by the scope of one of our retainers, simply call us on 0203 007 5500 to arrange a free 30-minute chat with one of our employment solicitors.

5. Who provides the services for the retainer?

You’ll have a dedicated employment law solicitor who you can call or email directly and who will provide you with day-to-day advice, alongside support from a team of Trainee Solicitors and Paralegals.
