Australia Entry Requirements from the UK:
Visa Options.
The first step in your relocation journey is understanding the visa options available for moving permanently to Australia from the UK. There are several visa categories to choose from, depending on your circumstances. The most common pathways are skilled migration, family, and partner visas.
Skilled Migration Visas
Skilled migration visas are designed for individuals with specific skills and qualifications that are in demand in Australia. The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program includes the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190), and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491).
To be eligible for a skilled migration visa, you’ll need to meet the following criteria:
- Be under 45 years of age
- Possess a skill that is on Australia’s skilled occupation list
- Have a positive skills assessment from a relevant assessing authority
- Be invited to apply for the visa
- Meet the minimum points requirement in the points-based system (including factors such as age, qualifications, and English language proficiency)
- Have a valid sponsor (not all visas require this)
Not all of these visas are available all of the time. In particular, the Skilled Regional visa can be closed to new applications from time to time.
The Australian government charges (on most skilled migration visas) a minimum of £2,300 for a single applicant and £6,300 for a family of 4 including 2 children under the age of 18. Processing times vary between 6 months to 2 years, so it is very important you get your visa application right to avoid wasting time, money and disappointment.
Family and Partner Visas
If you have a close family member or partner who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you may be eligible for a family or partner visa. These visas include the Partner Visa (subclasses 820 and 801), Prospective Marriage Visa (subclass 300), and various family visas such as Parent, Child, and Aged Dependent Relative visas. Visit our family visas page for more information.
Eligibility criteria for these visas vary depending on the visa subclass and your relationship with the Australian sponsor. An immigration solicitor can help assess your eligibility, prepare the necessary documentation, and navigate the application process.

Australia Entry Requirements from the UK:
Health and Character Checks.
Health and character checks are crucial components of the visa application process for permanent relocation to Australia from the UK. The Australian government requires all applicants to meet specific health and character standards to ensure public safety and protect the well-being of its citizens.
Health Checks.
As part of your visa application, you’ll need to undergo a health examination conducted by a panel physician approved by the Australian government. The required medical tests will depend on your age, visa type, and any pre-existing medical conditions. These tests may include a general physical examination, blood tests, chest X-rays, and additional assessments as needed.
As Australian immigration experts, we can help you arrange your health examination or direct you to an approved physician.
Character Checks.
One of the crucial Australia entry requirements from the UK is passing character checks. Character checks help ensure the safety and security of Australia’s residents and demonstrate good moral standing.
The process of obtaining a police clearance certificate from the UK, also known as an ‘ACRO Police Certificate’, is relatively straightforward. This document will verify if you have a criminal record, and it is mandatory for all visa applicants aged 16 years and older. You will also be required to provide police clearance certificates for every country you have resided for 12 months or more (cumulatively) in the last 10 years. This process can be a little more complex depending on the country you have resided.
To apply for an ACRO Police Certificate, you can visit the ACRO Criminal Records Office website and complete the online application form. You will need to provide personal information, including your full name, date of birth, and address history. The application fee varies depending on the processing time you choose, with standard service taking approximately 10 working days and a priority service available for faster processing.
Remember, the police clearance certificate must be less than 12 months old when you submit your visa application. If you have lived in other countries for 12 months or more, you may also need to provide a police clearance certificate from those countries.
What happens if you have a criminal record?
It’s likely that you will fail the character test if you have committed any substantial crimes, but it’s not always the case. Having an expert immigration solicitor help you with your application will improve the probability of your visa being approved.

Australia Entry Requirements from the UK:
Document Preparation.
An essential part of the visa application process is preparing the necessary documents. This stage can be time-consuming and complex, so it’s crucial to understand the types of documents required and ensure they are accurate and complete.
Personal Documents
You will need to provide several personal documents as part of your visa application, including your birth certificate and a valid UK passport. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining before your planned entry into Australia.
If any of your documents are not in English, certified translations will be required. You must use a professional translator accredited by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) or an equivalent body.
Employment and Education Documents
For skilled migration visas, you will need to provide employment and education documents, such as reference letters from previous employers, diplomas, and certificates. These documents must demonstrate your relevant work experience and qualifications for the nominated occupation.
Depending on your visa category, you may also need to undertake a skills assessment to have your qualifications and experience recognized by an Australian assessing authority. Keep in mind that this process can be lengthy, and the requirements vary depending on your profession.
Bear in mind the above documentation can be complex to prepare and it’s best to get either a solicitor or a MARA agent to help if you’re unsure or you think your application may be more complex.
The difference between MARA agents and registered solicitors
OMARA stands for the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority, the body that oversees migration agents in Australia.
If an agent is MARA-registered, it means they are legally able to offer Australian immigration services, however it is not a guarantee of quality.
Australian-qualified solicitors can do everything that a MARA agent can, but they are held to different standards than MARA agents. This includes stricter data protection enforcement, separate ethical and professional conduct standards, and oversight by the Legal Practitioner Conduct Commissioner.
The Australian government also requires immigration-registered solicitors that practice Australian immigration to provide immigration advice to clients alongside applications. This does not apply to MARA agents whose minimum work requirements are completing forms.
