Commonly asked questions on violent crimes.
Violent crimes are a severe offence under criminal law. Therefore, it’s important to understand precisely what violent crimes are and the potential punishments for these offences. As a result, our violent crime solicitors have answered some of the most commonly asked questions surrounding this topic.
1. What is a violent crime?
Violent crime is a large area of criminal law, which acts as an umbrella term for any criminal offence, which involves or threatens violence. Violent crimes don’t have to be physical; instead the mere threat that physical action could be taken is enough to classify an act as violent.
2. What are common examples of violent crimes?
Some of the most common examples of violent crimes include:
- Assault
- Criminal damage
- Domestic abuse
- Harassment
- Manslaughter
- Murder
- Sexual offences
- Acid attacks
- Robbery
- Gun and knife crimes
3. What are the punishments for violent crimes?
The punishment for a violent crime depends on three factors: the type, severity and frequency of the crime.
For example, threatening criminal damage to a property can result in a maximum criminal sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment, depending on factors such as whether the person threatening violence has a criminal record. However, if someone damaged or destroyed a property through fire, it would be classed as arson. Arson is a criminal offence, which may result in a penalty of life imprisonment.
Punishments for other violent crimes range from a few months of imprisonment for common assault, to life sentences for murder or robbery.
4. How much does defending a violent crime allegation cost?
The cost of defending a violent crime allegation will depend on the severity of the charges and the strength of evidence for and against you.
Our violent crime solicitors offer untimed consultations to run through all the details of your matter. Once you have highlighted the details of your matter, our solicitors will explain where you stand from a legal perspective, highlight the best options for defending your case and provide you with a more accurate cost and time estimate for your case.
However, to give you an idea of fees, our solicitors charge £250 + VAT – £300 + VAT per hour (depending on the solicitor’s seniority).
5. Why use a solicitor for your violent crime defence?
If you’re wrongly accused of a violent offence, make sure you don’t represent yourself as there’s too much at stake. In the most serious of situations, mishandling a violent crime defence can result in you receiving a life sentence in prison.
By instructing a criminal solicitor who specialises in violent crime defence, it will ensure you have:
- The best possible defence for your case
- a professional with experience in dealing with criminal defence cases
- an understanding of your standpoint and available options
- the knowledge to reduce potentially damaging impacts on your future
6. Do you offer legal aid for violent crime matters?
We are currently unable to offer legal aid in any capacity as we lack the necessary legal aid certificate. We also don’t offer pro bono work at present.
