Changing your name can leave you with many questions about how and when you can change your name. Therefore, our solicitors have answered some of the most commonly asked questions regarding the topic.
1. What is a deed poll?
A deed poll is a legal document that can be used to prove a name change. You can alter part of your name or change your name completely through a deed poll.
Some of the most common reasons people change their name include:
- Disliking their current name
- Changing their name after divorce.
- Altering the spelling of their name
- Adding names
- Changing child’s surname to mother’s or father’s.
If you’re looking to change your name through an enrolled deed poll, please call us on 020 3007 5500.
2. What is the difference between an enrolled and unenrolled deed poll?
The main differences of getting an enrolled deed poll over an unrolled deed poll include:
- Your new name will be published on the UK’s public record
- A UK government body will keep an original copy of the enrolled deed poll
- The enrolled deed poll acts as evidence of your name change
- All UK organisations will accept an enrolled deed poll
If you’re looking to change your name through an enrolled deed poll, call us on 020 3007 5500.
3. Can you use an enrolled deed poll to change a child's name?
In short, yes. However, the process of changing a child’s (aged 16 or below) name is slightly different. The process is different because each person with parental responsibility will need to consent to the name change first.
People who have parental responsibility:
- 1
- 2
- 3
- 4
In a circumstance where someone with parental consent is not consenting to the name change, don’t worry. You can make a court application to change your child’s name. Our solicitors can help you with this application. For more information, please call us on 020 3007 5500.
4. Why do I need a solicitor to change my name?
Changing your name can be a complex process where various issues can arise. Some of the most common issues include:
- Submitting incorrect information
- Failing to acquire a valid witness
- Failing to enrol the deed poll with the Royal Courts Justice.
- Someone with parental responsibility not consenting to your child’s name change.
Not seeking legal assistance to change your name can result in avoidable but costly mistakes. To contact one of our solicitors, please call us on 020 3007 5500.
