Commonly asked questions.
Do you need a document certified? If so, look no further, we can help. We provide certification services for passport duplicates, powers of attorney, and marriage certificates.
Below, our solicitors have answered some of the most commonly asked questions regarding the topic.
1. What is document certification?
Certification of documents is when a solicitor verifies that a copy of an original document is true. This document could be your passport, marriage certificate or even your will. Some organisations ask for certified copies of documents rather than originals. This means you don’t need to send in the original document so you can keep it safe.
Our solicitors can help with the following certifications:
- Passport certification
- Marriage certificate certification
- Will certification
- Court document certification
- HMRC certification
2. Why is certification of documents needed?
Some businesses or applications require a document to be certified. Most people will normally need a document certification when:
1. They conduct an official business transaction. For example, taking out a commercial lease or instructing a professional service
2. Opening a bank account or applying for a mortgage
3. Asked by the Government or by a court
If you have been asked to present a certified copy of a document, we offer certification services. To get in contact call us on 020 3007 5500.
3. What does getting documents certified involve?
For document certifications, simply give us a call, and we’ll book you in for an appointment with one of our solicitors. We will ask you to bring the following documentation:
- An original copy of the document that needs to be certified
- Proof of Address dated within the last three months (Bank Statement, Utility Bill etc.).
- Proof of ID
Our solicitor will look over the document you need certified in the appointment and then add a statement as to why they are certifying the document. After, they will then add their signature to certify that the copy is true.
4. Who can certify documents in the UK?
There are several professional individuals who can carry out the certification of documents, which include:
- Solicitors
- Chartered accountants
- Bank officials
It’s always advised to use a solicitor when having a document certified as they will ensure the documents are legally checked and are certified in a quick and easy manner.
