The Australian Skilled Occupation List (SOL) refers to occupations that are under demand within Australia, making them eligible for permanent migration. This article will cover the SOL and surrounding requirements.
What is the Australian Skilled Occupation List (SOL)?
The Skilled Occupation List (SOL) refers to a list of occupations that are in high demand in Australia. The Australian economy considers these occupations crucial, making them eligible for permanent skilled migration. The SOL is divisible into three categories: Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL), Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), and Regional Occupation List (ROL).
Designed to address the country’s skill shortages, the Australian Skilled Occupation list aims to attract highly skilled workers from overseas to fill the gaps in the country’s local labour market.
Occupations on the list are divisible into different categories based on their skill level. Higher skill levels usually result in a higher likelihood of receiving a skilled migration visa. The list receives regular updates to ensure it remains relevant to the needs of the Australian economy.
Skilled Migration Visas.
There are several skilled migration visas available for individuals who want to permanently move to Australia and have the necessary occupation or skills. For more information on the various types of skilled migration visas, visit our blog on Skilled Migration Visas.
Applying for Skilled Migration Visas
To apply for a skilled migration visa, you must meet the eligibility criteria. This includes age, English language proficiency, and health and character requirements. It also includes a skills assessment. Here’s a brief overview of the application process:
- Identify an occupation that matches your skills and qualifications and is on the SOL.
- Undergo a skills assessment by the relevant assessing authority. The assessing authority will determine if your skills and qualifications meet the Australian standards for the occupation.
- Upon completion of a positive skills assessment, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through the SkillSelect system. Factors such as age, English language proficiency, and work experience will influence your EOI.
- If successful, you will receive an invitation to apply and you then need to submit a formal visa application within 60 days. Within your application you will need to provide supporting documents such as your skills assessment, English language test results, and police clearance certificates.
Required Qualifications and Experience.
The qualifications and experience required for skilled migration visas vary depending on the occupation. Generally, you will need to have a degree or diploma in the relevant field and several years of work experience. In some cases, you may require additional qualifcations.
For example:
- To be eligible for a skilled migration visa as an accountant, you will need to have a degree in accounting or a related field and at least three years of relevant work experience. You will also need to have your skills assessed by the Institute of Public Accountants, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, or CPA Australia
- To be eligible for a skilled migration visa as an electrician, you will need to have a certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician or a related field and several years of work experience. You will also need to have your skills assessed by Trades Recognition Australia.
